The NAVIS Centre was setup in the framework of EU funded projects in 2009/2010 to act as linking entity between Europe and South East Asia (SEA) in the field of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) to promote European technology by reinforcing cross-links between EU and SEA actors and facilitating international collaboration among players. This also in connection with the Co-Chair's Statement of the 18th ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting - Madrid, 26 May 2010 - that reports: “51. The Ministers welcomed the setting-up of a co-operation framework in the field of civilian use of satellite navigation systems, and expressed their willingness to promote the involvement of their relevant institutions and organisations. They encouraged in particular the establishment of a permanent EU-ASEAN collaboration centre on civilian use of satellite navigation systems.” The Centre got also consistent support from the Italian Government in the framework of the Executive Programme of Scientific and Technological Cooperation between the Italian Republic and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

The NAVIS Center is managed by the Hanoi University of Science and Technology through an international cooperation scheme that foresees a committee of Supporting Institutions jointly collaborating with the Centre and the appointment of an international co-director that takes care, together with the Vietnamese Director, of the Centre management.

The four Supporting institutions of NAVIS, which have been working together since the very beginning to setup the Centre, are:

  •      The Hanoi University of Science and Technology;
  •      The Istituto Superiore Mario Boella-ISMB (Now Links Foundation)
  •      The Politecnico di Torino
  •      The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya

People of Navis can belong to the following groups:

  • Board of Supporting Institution: including the representatives of the Supporting Institutions
  • Executive Committee: including the Director and Vice-Directors of Navis
  • Scientific Committee: at this moment, this committee is identical to the Board of Supporting Institution.
  • Regular Staff: including HUST staff and PhD students working in Navis.
