From September, 9th to 13rd, 2013, NAVIS Center coordinated with the European and Asian partners in the EU-FP7 project: GROWING NAVIS to organize an international summer school on “Multi-GNSS Environment for Sustainable Development” at Hoi An city, Viet Nam. The summer school aims at providing the ASEAN research and technology community with the updated knowledge about the multi-gnss environment and advanced specific topics to promote the application of multi-gnss in ASEAN social and economic development.

The school’s lectures were delivered by sixteen lecturers from different countries: EU, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Japan, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Viet Nam, who are distinguishable researchers as well as representatives of international organizations in the area of satellite navigation and space technology. There were totally twenty five participants coming from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Viet Nam.

The lectures were designed to target two groups of attendees: the management and policy planning staff and scientific staff. During five days of the school, participants were updated with the latest knowledge at the general level as well as the advanced one in the area of GNSS. In addition, under the guidance of the international instructors, all the people actively participated in live demonstrations, and discussions on how to use GNSS technology for solving social and economic issues.

The five-day summer school has been successfully closed leading to potential future collaborations in the area of GNSS among ASEAN countries and higher position of Hanoi University of Science and Technology in the research area of GNSS.

 
Announcement of the 5th Asia Oceania Regional Workshop on GNSS Print Email

 

We are pleased to announce that the 5th Asia Oceania Regional Workshop on GNSS will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam, 1-3 December 2013, jointly organized by Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), Growing NAVIS, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Satellite Positioning Research and Application Center (SPAC), QZS System Services Inc. (QSS) and supported by United Nations International Committee on GNSS (ICG), together with International Global Navigation Satellite Systems Service (IGS).


Currently Multi-GNSS Asia (MGA) Member has increased to 25 organizations, and eight collaborative experiments of Multi-GNSS are going on and new five experiments have been started by JAXA. And 68 stations of "Multi-GNSS Monitoring Network (MGM-net)" to track and monitor Multi-GNSS have started of operation mainly in the Asia-Oceania region.
In this Workshop, the status of the MGM-net and the collaborative experiments will be reported and the specific plan of demonstrative experiments after future years will be presented and discussed. And the information about the latest developments and needs of Multi-GNSS will be shared.


International organizations, government agencies, companies, universities and research institutes which have an interest in the utilization of multi-constellation GNSS are especially welcomed to participate and to contribute to this workshop.

Successfully using Beidou navigation service in NAVIS Print Email

Since December 27, 2012, the Beidou Navigation Satellite System officially started to provide the free civil navigation service to users in the Asia - Pacific region. After the official statement, we started to develop our first Beidou receiver, which is also among the firsts in the world. 

The Beidou Navigation Satellite System is a Chinese satellite navigation system. It consists of 2 separate satellite constellations-a limited test system that has been operating since 2000 and a full-scale global navigation system that is currently under construction. The first Beidou system, officially called the Beidou Satellite Navigation Experimental, in the period development, the system consists of three satellites. It provided navigation services for customers in China and neighboring regions, since 2000. The second Beidou system was initiated in 2004 and it became operational in China and neighbor countries in December 2011 with 10 satellites in use[1], and began offering services to customers in the Asia-Pacific region in December 2012. The third generation of the system will be developed continuously and available by 2020 with the global coverage capability.

With the objective of developing a multi-GNSS receiver, which could operate with all GNSS systems available, we started to work with Beidou signal right after the announcement from the Chinese goverment about the availability of the Beidou navigation signals. Our Beidou receiver, which is a part of the multi-GNSS NAVISOFT receiver, is now sucessful in decoding the E2-I civil signal, demodulating both the D1 and D2 types of navigation messages, and eventually computing the position, velocity and also timing results. Below are some figures of important signal processing blocks of the receiver:

This Beidou receiver contributes an important part to the NAVISOFT receiver developed by NAVIS. NAVISOFT works with not only all GNSSes (i.e. GPS/GLONASS/Galileo/Beidou) but also QZSS, which is a regional system of Japan and also broadcasts augmentation data for improving GNSS positioning. More importantly, beside stand-alone mode, in which each system operates independently, NAVISOFT also supports the real combined multi-GNSS mode, in which all satellites in view from all systems are utilized to provide a common positioning and navigation solution. Fig. 3 shows the sky plot of all satellites in view and combined positioning results reported by NAVISOFT:

NAVIS visits Torino for ICL-GNSS 2013 and G-NAVIS midterm review Print Email

From 25 June to 3 July 2013, the representative of NAVIS, Dr. Ta Hai Tung, visited Torino, Italia for the International Conference on Localization and GNSS (ICL-GNSS 2013); the mid-term review of the Growing NAVIS project; as well as several research exchange activities with the NAVSAS laboratory at ISMB.

At the ICL-GNSS 2013, Dr. Tung presented a paper titled: "Recent results in receiving and decoding signals from the Beidou system" co-authored with Truong Minh Duc, Tran Thanh Trung and Nguyen Dinh Thuan. The paper presents the research results of NAVIS on Chinese Beidou Navigation System, which has just broadcasted services to users in Asian - Pacific region since December 2012. At this moment, outside China, there are not mass-market Beidou receivers. The paper will be soon available on the IEEE Xplorer.

After the ICL-GNSS 2013, Dr. Tung also attended the midterm-review of the Growing NAVIS project. During the session, all WP leaders of the project presented the results in the first half of the project's life. Ms. Justyna REDELKIEWICZ MUSIAL, the representative of European GNSS Agency, also attended the review over teleconference from Prague. The review was succesful, which showed the quality of the acitivities carried on by the Growing NAVIS consortium. NAVIS, as a focal point of the project, will surely grow up with those results.

Discussions on research cooperations at ISMB

A part from the conference and the review, Dr. Tung also took the opportunity to have several important discussions with NAVSAS group at ISMB, and especially with the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of European Commission. Some important discussions with NAVSAS and JRC were conducted, which promise a fruitful research cooperations on satellite navigation among NAVIS, NAVSAS and JRC, especially in the field of ionospheric monitoring, which is now catching the great attention of the GNSS community. Located near the equator where the ionosphere anomaly is visible and not well understood, NAVIS can play an important role in doing research in this field.

 

 
NAVIS at SCOSA-24, Tagaytay, the Philippines Print Email

In 20-21 May 2013, Dr. TA Hai Tung attended the 24th Meeting of the Sub-Committee on Space Technology and Application (SCOSA) in Tagaytay City, the Philippines. The Sub-Committee belongs to the ASEAN Committee on Science and Technology (COST), which also held the 65th Meeting (ASEAN COST-65) from 20-25 May 2013 at the same place.

During the SCOSA-24, Dr. Tung presented the activities of the NAVIS Centre, and expressed the willingness of the Centre to cooperate with SCOSA in the field of satellite navigation. Also, on behalf of the Growing NAVIS consortium, Dr. Tung introduced to all participants from ASEAN member states the Summer School on Multi-GNSS Environment for Sustainable Development, which will be held in Hoi An City from 8-13 September 2013.

The SCOSA appreciated the activites of NAVIS and promised to support G-NAVIS in promoting the Summer School in ASEAN countries.
